photography in the early 20th century

https://www.khanacademy.org/humanities/art-1010/beginners-guide-20-21/a/an-introduction-to-photography-in-the-early-20th-century

looking back on how photography became popular we have to think about the invention of the kodak #1 which made it to the middle class by 1888 and later on down the line kodak made the brownie camera which was much cheaper making it available for the middle class by 1900.

the scientific aspect of photography became apparent as well, now we had a form of documenting events, objects and people as evidence. photographers like Edweard Muybridge created portfolios to measure animal and human locomotion. His famous images recorded key stages in movement which couldn't be highlighted with the human eye. the work fulfilled the cameras promise to clarify, enhance and allow scientists to study new areas and/or further into certain situations and scenarios.

artistically photography was initially used to capture exact detail and for the simple fact it can reproduce artwork for publication. however, photographers in this century struggled for artistic recognition possibly due to the fact that it was a much simpler, easier and more reliable method of portrait painting and highlighted hidden imperfections in artists work. the medium finally gained some kind of artistic traction when Paris's Universal Exposition in 1859(20 years after its invention) displayed photography and other art forms such as, paining, sculpting, engraving, next to each other for the first time. However, separated by different entrances and exhibitions spaces preserved the distinction between the two mediums. much of this was down to the fact that photographs are mechanically reproduced images, even kodaks selling point wasn't doing any favours for photography  ,"You press the button, we do the rest" simply highlighted the fact that its not physically hard to take a photo and led artist to believe it was a very effortless medium.

yarn bombing

this is a technique that was originally about reclaiming and personalising cold, boring public places and objects. opposed to graffiti which initially had the morals to either express, decorate, highlight territory, socio-political commentary and advertising.
Yarn street art although lasts for many months is seen as a more short term, easily removable alternative to graffiti. even though its easily removable its is still classed as an illegal act.

-he remained in the house for 4 years with the same studio.
-during this time he began establishing himself as a painter.
-to generate income man ray was a commercial artist and a technical illustrator at several companies in manhattan.
-the surviving drawing from this period of time suggest he practiced in the 19th century style of artwork.
-was already at this stage an avid fan of contemporary avant-garde art e.g the european modernist.

Cubamania collage

after looking into various types of existing surrealism. i came across a collage technique which required you to cut up your existing image into either triangles or squares mix them up and randomly places them back down after shuffling. so initially i tried it out with one of my already existing images. cutting this one into square pieces. i then chose a different image and cut that one into triangles and pieced it together in the same way and immediately enjoyed the image more. i then began thinking of was to alter the method and make it more my own so i then put made individual 3d shapes and put them together to create a relief.

Experimental work

these are some experimentation pieces i used to influence where my project will end up.
this technique is called automatic drawing and basically you allow your subconscious mind to come through, forgetting about your conscious. this allows you to show your true emotions and thoughts through a simple line drawing because of this its good as a stress relieving exercise. artist have used this technique as a way of letting there emotions out before creating art work and some have even used it as final pieces.

this is a piece i drew which started off with the can of pop at the bottom of the image. i basically expanded from there drawing whatever fitted and came to mind and then towards the end review the whole piece and gave it a meaning. i discovered this technique when reading about surrealism on wiki and it said to resolve the previously contradictory conditions of dream and reality. this got me thinking and gave me the idea to draw in this manor. whilst i was doing this it was almost as if i was back in maths class drawing random things because i was bored.
