Healthy living

this is the piece i photographed to put into photoshop and underneath it would have the caption "how highly do you think about cigarets?" i chose this because in the illustration it shows the cigaret taller than skyscrapers and looking down on you.
this piece was the start point for our healthy living project. at this point i was in a group of 2 and we decided to try and promote healthy living by creating a series of comic like posters which show the fag as being a villain and the carrot as the supper hero. we came to this conclusion because if we gave people a alternative lifestyle (smoking and eating shit) then they would eventually hate it because all these fast food, cigaret companies are looking for is your money and eventually would end up clogging our towns and cities with their produce rather than healthy and more interesting things such as, parks etc.

doodle art

this image i like because of the craziness of the design and how all the focus is put on the text.

the two images above really inspired my work as when i started thinking about the doodle idea i wanted to look into certain art piece which incorporated doodling. however, my favourite one out of the 2 is this one because it incorporates the purposeful, story telling which i got from researching into alan fletcher and is key to the viewer as its actually has to make them think.

this image i chose because i didn't like the way it was laid out for example if the viewer were to look at this they wouldn't know where to look or what the message of the piece was.

learner survival guide final piece

Although this piece has the exact same graffiti as the white wall design it has been repositioned and enhanced to make it look as if it is sprayed on the wall. Another change in this piece I expanded from my white wall graffiti/doodle design by changing the background to a more urban landscape which i preferred over the white brick wall as it gave a more relatable and natural look when the graffiti was applied to it. I also chose a different copy line for this piece 'where vandalism becomes valuable' which is similar to the one in the white wall design but has more of a meaning behind it as i looked into vandalism in worksop and soon came across tones of links which reported a number of attacks on the worksop community-http://www.nottinghampost.com/Vandals-hit-Worksop-streets/story-12230982-detail/story.html and http://www.retfordtoday.co.uk/news/is-that-was-you-call-gratitude-1-3462206 both give examples of the youth letting there frustration out on the Bassetlaw district and my copy line tells them that nnc is the place for them to take all there negative energy out and create something productive. The copy line also has a varied font which goes from a font which is blocky and boring to a fancy font which shows the viewer the change of mind set they will have going from boring and destructive to interesting and constructive.
in my final piece i used many processes which include the skewing of the text and the graffiti, fade tool within the layer of the graffiti and the copy line to make it look as if it was sprayed on the wall, the mirror tool so the background could mirror from front to back page (i did try it without but wasn't as affective) and the font tool which gave to multiple affects on the copy line which gives me the change in fonts as explained above.
Overall i chose this piece as my final one as it refined everything from my previous designs and i gave the overall piece a meaning behind it. Although the piece isn't the best technically as i didn't use my full skill set but it is the wist impact full and effective because it speaks to the majority of our target audience which is 16-19 year olds in nnc due to the fact that we all know about worksop and the things that go on but my final piece shows them that nnc cares and creates better people.

white wall graffiti/doodle design

this design originated from a personal habit which is doodling and when my tutor confronted about it, it triggered the series of idea which began with just a graffiti piece which said learner survival guide and a white brick wall back ground. this then escalated by me adding boarders and colour to the graffiti to make it more dynamic and crazy to the viewer. i then went back to look at my original ideas for this piece and realised that the initiation of my idea (doodles) wasn't included in the piece which didn't concern me at first but when thinking about it further i came to the conclusion that the piece needed it as it signifies all boring aspects of school/college for people our age and i then gave it a copy line which was 'where doodle mean something' simple but effective to the viewer and i needed this to bring it back round to being positive and constructive as we are promoting nnc.
in this piece i used a range of functions and techniques. to start with i photographed and illustrated every doodle on the piece other than nnc logo, the copy line and nnc info which enhanced the quality and made moving and enlarging the images a lot easier. another process i used was the opacity on the paint brush tool which gave me dynamic and faded colours on my graffiti wording this gave the piece a centre point to the piece as every thing is black or white other than the graffiti. to make the doodles look like they were actually on the wall i had to double click on the layer which brought me to a tab which showed me two bars the top one changes the strength of the colour and the bottom changes the contrast between the layer and the background which gives you the effect of the graffiti being on the wall. i did this with every single thing on there to give the piece consistency. the finale process i used was the text tool which gave me my copy line which needed to be the clarity to my piece as it brings everything back round in my piece to give the viewer an easy understanding of what the piece is trying to say.
to conclude i am very happy with this piece however, the over all piece didn't feel as if it challenged me to my full potential as the processes i used weren't hard to do but they were effective for the purpose of the overall brief which is to promote nnc to people our age. i guess that the constant battle with a graphic designer is do you show your whole skill range and disregard the meaning of the piece or make the piece simple but have a lot of meaning. personally i think the true answer is that a a lance between both will always be better than one or the other as no matter how hard the process you use or how much meaning the piece has if it doesn't come through in the piece it doesn't matter and the piece has failed to entice the viewer.

nike design evaluation

the nike design i did is effective in the aspect that people our age will know exactly what it is and won't be confused when looking at it. which is the overall aim of the piece to communicate easily with the viewer.
the negatives of the piece are that because it is a internet sourced image the quality is very poor therefore you are limited to the size and positioning of the image. also when making a leaflet for a client you don't really want there to be a limitations on the imaging for example - if the client wanted you to change to imaging to fit there specifications (enlarge the image), it could be very time consuming and in the long run it would be easier to of simply photographed the image to enhance the quality.

Iconic Brands

These are eye catching and relevant brands in which i could implement into my work. below are some brand logos which are very familiar to everyday people. these logos aren't a bad place to start when looking to develop ideas however, i want my work to have some originality and be slightly more complex than just changing words and enhancing the logo slightly.

the reason why i wouldn't use any of these images is because they all already have strong opinions behind them, also none of these images have the right message behind them. i would like to send out the viewer a relaxed and creative vibe which will loosely translate into nnc being a relax and creative place to be for students.

for one of my pieces i would choose one of these images because they all portray the type of message i want to put across.
this one is my personal favourite because nike branch out into many different sports and lifestyles. if i were to use this image to base my idea around it tells the viewer that nnc is a widely ranged college and is open minded to all people.

I've chosen the 3 above because it also has the relax, creative, skateboarder lifestyle behind it and it also got me thinking about the diversity between each logo as the first one is set inside a skateboard and the slogan is implemented. the second logo is basic and just says the brand name which is good because it doesn't confuse the viewer and the viewer will still know where it comes from. finally, the 3rd logo is the most complex and in my opinion the best because you can do more with it however, if you were to change the words you wouldn't loose the brand incorporation which is key to this piece as thats where the audience will engage with the piece.

in this piece i like the font of the writing which seems to take a graffiti style and adds that element of confusion to the piece, i also like how its skewed because that suggest to the viewer that not every things always straight forward and you may need to look at things differently. although i don't think i will take direct inspiration from this logo i will be taking things from this piece and implementing them into my work as they are really strong ideas/concepts.

this logo incorporates something in which none of the others do and thats the fact they used all lower case for the brand name which is iconic because thats meant to be the stand out bit of the logo however, it makes it just a stood out because its not really seen before.

this logo is one of my favourites as the text looks as if its been drawn in charcoal and the 'e' is replaced by 3 horizontal lines which is another technique which is interesting. however, this brand isn't very well know so it wouldn't really be appropriate as i am trying to catch the eye of the viewer.

Graphic designers - Alan Fletcher

Alan Fletcher is a very famous graphic designer with his designs globally noticed personally the v&a logo would be the one in which is most recognisable. However, my favourite aspect of his work is how he uses text to create images and effects which give meaning and draw the viewer in for example the 22nd Icograda Seminar which shows a man screaming with the text looking as if the words were coming out of his mouth. In my opinion his work contains tones of meaning which isn't different to many graphic designers but it was the turning point in my work which made me think that you can use words to help viewer understand what your piece is trying to say more easily. This will not only entice the viewer by shortening the window of confusion but it will also add to the meaning of the final product as each viewer will take a slightly different outlook on the product in comparison to another. Overall, Alan's work inspired me to use words and phrases to entice the viewer by using image or context to make it easier to relate to the product.

These are two examples of what i am talking about. Making the way the text is presented tell the story not the words!
